New Zealand extends stays for remote foreign workers to encourage growth

Good news! New Zealand has opened its doors wider to digital nomads, allowing remote workers and social media influencers to stay for up to 90 days without tax obligations. The move is designed to attract high-earning professionals who can inject money into the economy while working for foreign employers. Visas can be extended up to nine months, but you may need to pay tax during this time.

New Zealand's Minister for Economic Growth, Nicola Willis, said relaxing the rules for digital nomads (people who work remotely overseas) will boost the country's appeal. Miss Willis said she wants "more wealth and super-talented people coming in the arrival gates". The government plans to target highly skilled tech professionals from the US and East Asia to capitalise on their spending power.

The impact on tourism and further information

New Zealand's economy has struggled to recover after the COVID-19 pandemic, suffering consistently high interest rates, increased unemployment and a slump in visitor numbers. Before the pandemic, tourism was the country's largest source of income, delivering NZ$40.9bn (around US$22bn) annually. The government hopes the digital nomad scheme will accelerate a rebound in fortunes.
